Grower benchmarking for one of Australia's largest avocado wholesalers

The Avolution, one of Australia's largest avocado wholesalers and a prominent player in the avocado supply chain, collects vast amounts of operational and grower data through its Pick2Market (P2M) database. Without automated extraction or insights-driven reporting, much of this valuable information was going unused.

Historical data spanning 2013 to 2020 was locked in the P2M database with no API or direct access options, and grower performance metrics were neither benchmarked nor visualised in a way that could deliver actionable insight.

Operational issues such as processing delays were hard to identify in real time, and the absence of a streamlined data pipeline made it difficult to turn raw data into visual insight for growers, staff, stakeholders and customers.

We took a structured, multi-phase approach, beginning with data preparation and cleansing: normalising tray sizes into standardised weight categories for consistent benchmarking, cleaning and geo-locating grower addresses to create a reliable spatial dataset, summarising order dates into quarterly periods for faster analysis, and rationalising grower regions using ABS geographic maps.

We designed a Tableau grower benchmarking portal that benchmarks each grower's production, fruit size, grade and net returns, and lets growers compare their performance against overall production averages to reveal areas for improvement.

We built an operational efficiency dashboard with visual tools to identify delays in processing and delivery, including calendar-style views to monitor logistics issues in near real time and flag anomalies quickly.

We also set out strategic recommendations (automating data extractions, creating real-time dashboards, and adding future dashboards for financial performance and buyer/agent interactions) to pave the way for long-term strategic reporting.

The grower portal provided actionable insight into production size, grade and profitability, empowering growers to benchmark and optimise their performance both locally and nationally.

The delivery efficiency dashboard flagged anomalies, enabling staff to address delays and improve customer satisfaction.

A clear data-maturity roadmap for automating extraction and expanding reporting capabilities set the foundation for long-term success.

Overall, the engagement transformed The Avolution's historical data into a suite of interactive Tableau dashboards delivering strategic and operational insight, and demonstrated the potential of data-driven decision-making for the business's future growth.
